The Brief
County Hall in Norwich required replacement of ageing glazing across two wings, an internal courtyard and the tower block. The existing glazing had been in place for around 30 years, with reports of draughts and water ingress forming part of a wider building upgrade.
The programme needed to improve the building envelope while working across a large, occupied public-sector site and avoiding the embodied carbon associated with full façade recladding.
The Outcome
The project delivered a major upgrade to the building envelope, replacing 580 ageing windows and 16 door sets with modern, thermally enhanced aluminium systems.
The new glazing improved thermal performance and comfort across the building, while solar-control glass helped reduce unwanted heat gain and glare without compromising natural daylight. By targeting the existing windows and doors rather than replacing the entire façade, the programme also extended the life of the building envelope while avoiding the additional embodied carbon associated with full recladding.
Delivering the programme across two wings, an internal courtyard and the tower block required a carefully phased approach around an occupied public-sector building. Fixed scaffold, specialist alloy towers and MEWPs provided safe access across the different elevations, allowing the works to progress while keeping disruption to building users to a minimum.
