The Brief

More than 30-year-old timber windows and doors at an occupied care home had reached the end of their serviceable life, affecting thermal performance, comfort and security across the building.

With works required to occupied bedrooms and communal areas, including dementia care suites, the programme needed to be carefully planned around residents and the day-to-day operation of the home. The priority was to improve the building’s performance while maintaining a safe, calm and familiar environment throughout the works.

Riverside Care Home – Phased Window & Door Upgrades

The Outcome

The programme transformed the performance of the care home’s ageing windows and doors, providing residents with warmer, more comfortable rooms alongside improved safety and security.

Thermal performance was significantly improved, with window U-values reduced from approximately 3.0–4.0 W/m²K to 1.2 W/m²K. The new A-rated windows also provide a durable, lower-maintenance solution designed to support reduced heat loss and energy use over the longer term.

Delivering the programme within an occupied care environment required a particularly sensitive approach. By working room by room and coordinating closely around residents and care teams, Evander was able to complete the upgrades while maintaining a calm, familiar environment and keeping disruption to a minimum.

Our Solution

We developed a phased replacement programme, working room by room to minimise disruption and allow the care home to remain fully operational throughout.

  • Replacement of 131 windows and eight door sets

  • Installation of A-rated UPVC windows to improve thermal performance

  • Window restrictors to support resident safety

  • Replacement external doors and fire-exit door sets

  • A phased, room-by-room installation programme around residents and care teams

  • Careful coordination of works within occupied bedrooms, communal areas and dementia care suites

  • Recycling of removed uPVC materials where appropriate
