Broken Glass – Damage Limitation

Evander Glazing & Locks can help you minimise any damage caused by broken glass. Through our safety-compliant glazing products and special safety film, we can make sure you comply with the law, protect your property and reduce the risk of injury.

Regulation 14

Under Regulation 14, it’s now law that existing glass in commercial buildings must be upgraded to break safely and must meet EN12600 European impact tests.
Regulation 14 states that:
Every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall or partition, and every transparent or translucent surface in a door or gate shall, where necessary for reasons of health or safety:

  • Be of ‘safety material’, or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material and be appropriately marked or incorporate features so as, in either case, to make it apparent.
  • If you’re a building owner, building manager, tenant or Health & Safety manager, you’ll need to be aware of the types of glass in your building and ensure they comply with Regulation 14.
  • Penalties where injuries are sustained due to broken glass that does not meet Regulation 14 are unlimited. You could even find yourself facing Corporate Manslaughter charges if you fail to comply.
  • The requirements of Regulation 14 and those of the 1991 Building Regulations are reflected in the British Standards Code of Practice BS6262 Part 4 1994. All low level glazing where employees or the public are likely to come into contact should, where necessary for reasons of health and safety, be protected against breakage.
  • Evander Glazing & Locks can help you minimise the risk of injury due to broken glass. We can:
  • Carry out a detailed evaluation of your premises and identify any areas that need upgrading
  • Provide an estimated cost
  • Agree a planned implementation programme to complete the work.

Explosions

Unfortunately, bomb blasts are a reality of the times we live in – whether it’s through terrorist attacks, organised rights groups or even individuals. Built-up areas are particularly targeted for maximum impact. Similarly, gas explosions can also have a devastating effect on people, property and businesses.

When an explosion happens, 90% of injuries and damage is caused by broken glass flying through the air – it can travel at speeds of up to 40 metres per second. That’s where bomb blast film can significantly reduce the damage – by holding together the fragments of glass.

Bomb blast film can:

  • Help to prevent fatalities and serious injury through broken glass
  • Limit damage to property
  • Protect expensive assets such as computer equipment
  • Assist disaster recovery and reduce expensive business downtime
  • Eliminate the need to relocate premises during clear-up if the building is structurally sound.

Security

Vandalism and break-ins to premises cost UK businesses millions of pounds every year. While you may never completely prevent damage to your property, the application of security film can prevent or minimise damage caused by broken glass and act as a significant deterrent.
