Case studies
Buncefield Oil Depot
On December 11 2005 an explosion occurred at the Buncefield oil depot in Hertfordshire, leading to Europe’s biggest peacetime fire. The explosion caused damage on a massive scale, with thousands of local properties in the surrounding areas being affected.
Evander Glazing & Locks acted swiftly to assist the local community. Within an hour of the event occurring, we had invoked our surge contingency plan, with the Operations Director assuming overall responsibility for co-coordinating the security and reinstatement efforts.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster the principal issues were around securing properties which had suffered glass and frame damage as a result of the explosion. As the preferred supplier for many insurance companies, Evander Glazing & Locks received an uplift of around 300% of jobs for the local branch.
All engineers from the local branch and neighbouring branches were mobilised to secure the properties on Day One. And in the subsequent days and weeks we assigned our Operations Support team to the area to assist with the fulfillment of claims. This included deploying members from our call centre and Customer Services to work in the local branch, in order to assist with phone queries and schedule works.
A crucial aspect of the Buncefield surge plan was the proactive engagement with insurance customers. We ensured our Account Management and Operations teams were in daily contact with them, providing updates on job completions and progressions as well as settlement values.
Evander Glazing & Locks was commended by insurance customers for the lead role we took in co-ordinating the surge event and the professional way in which we regularly communicated our actions of management.
Cumbria Floods
In November 2009, torrential rain caused rivers to burst their banks in the north west of England, with the Cumbria area particularly badly affected. Localised flooding damaged nearly 900 homes and businesses, with the cost of damage exceeding £200 million.
In the aftermath of this severe flooding Evander Glazing & Locks has been assisting insurance customers with repair works. In January alone our Carlilse branch received over 40 enquiries for the Cockermouth area, with the majority of enquiries being referred by loss adjustors and companies specialising in property reinstament.
Water penetration affected many of the windows and doors in these properties, so Evander Glazing & Locks set up a specialist surveying team to manage the uplift in instructions in this area.
The surveying at each property was undertaken thoroughly, with the items stripped apart in the first instance to gauge the extent of the water damage. Each item was then assessed as to whether it could be cleaned and reinstated without full replacement.
By spending the additional time on site to do this, we were able to demonstrate a strong ‘repair first’ ethos, which helped to reduce the cost and inconvenience for our customers.
The vast majority of the glass repair works were co-ordinated alongside additional building reinstatement, including replastering, decorating and floor replacement. Adopting a flexible and bespoke approach in working with loss adjustors and property reinstatement specialists is indicative of Evander’s desire to go the extra mile for our customers.
