Love Your Home this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us, and if you’re one for romance, then you may be looking forward to treating a special someone to flowers, chocolates or even a trip away. They say that home is where the heart is, so why not also show your property some love this year? The benefits of home improvement can be so much more than just how things look.

Home with Heart In

Keep It Safe & Secure

When you love something, you want it to be safe. The care that we show others is a big part of this, and the same goes for your home. Whether you live alone, with a partner or with friends/family, it’s in your interests to keep your property secure.

The thought of being burgled or your home becoming compromised because of something you were able to fix is horrible. Sometimes burglaries will happen when you’ve taken every precaution, but a lot of the time they’re opportunistic and prompted by poor property integrity. A thief who sees an enclosed empty property with no alarm, old doors and windows and easily-broken locks may see an easy in-and-out opportunity. Seeing the same home with extra security features and knowing that he/she can be seen by either security cameras or other properties isn’t likely to inspire them to break in.

Home Security Checklist:

  • Do all your windows lock properly? You may be surprised at the amount of people who don’t or can’t lock their windows, particularly ground floor ones. It’s an extremely common way for thieves to gain entry, so make sure all windows work properly. See our range of secure windows here.
  • Do you have outside lighting, a security camera, or neighbours overlooking your property? If a thief thinks they’re going to be seen, then they may think twice about targeting your home. Everyone likes privacy, but ensuring you don’t have large bushes or trees completely surrounding your home can be enough to put off criminals.
  • Do you leave tools/ladders in an unlocked or badly secured area of your garden? Using your own tools and DIY paraphernalia against you is one of the most frustrating ways to be burgled. Keep your tools locked firmly away and out of sight, and never leave ladders in your garden unattended.
  • Do you have a home security alarm? Just the presence of an alarm box on the side of your home can be enough to worry even the most careless of thieves. These days, alarms come with a wide range of accessories and are wireless and therefore very easy to fit. See our range of alarm packages here.
  • Have you considered an additional security measure for your patio doors? Patio doors which open outwards or inwards (French doors) rather than slide are often overlooked as a vulnerable entry to your home. Patlock additional locking systems are a cheap and affective way to deter burglars. Read more about them here.

Show It Some TLC

Showing love and care to your home is more than just keeping it safe and secure. Creating a home which you love spending time in and which looks great from both the outside and the inside is a respectful way to treat your most valuable asset. It never hurts to get compliments from your friends and neighbours too!

Getting your property just how you want it can take years, so it’s important to be patient with this kind of improvement. Some home improvements can bring benefits but make little difference to how your home looks and feels. Other types of improvement can make a huge difference to the curb appeal of your home and make you feel happier and prouder to live there. These types of jobs can give you and your home a huge boost and don’t have to be hugely expensive.

Home Sweet HomeHome Improvements which Make an Impact

  • A new front door. Our range of colourful front doors in traditional and contemporary designs will not only give your home a lift but will also update the security and thermal efficiency of the main entrance to your property. See our range here.
  • A new garage door. Your garage makes up a large part of the front of your property and the door is a big expanse in itself. If this is worn out, dented, faded or warped, then it won’t reflect well on the rest of your home. Check out our great garage door range here.
  • Window repairs. Broken window frames and cracked glazing don’t look good and nor are they safe. A damaged window can make a big difference to how potential burglars perceive your home. Repair any broken glazing as soon as possible.
