How To Repair Your Garage Door

Your garage door is an integral and large part of your home, and when it’s not working properly it can be more than just an inconvenience – it could also pose a danger to those of you in the household who use it. Garage doors are heavy and cumbersome, so their internal mechanisms are designed to carry the weight of the door panel, making it easy for you to open and close the door. When something goes wrong, your garage door could feel much heavier, open unevenly and even fail to stay open properly, putting your vehicle and other people at risk, especially pets and children.

For this reason, it’s important to address any issues as they arise. If your door is still under warranty (which is worth checking, as warranties for the doors themselves can be up to 10 years and here at Evander our workmanship is guaranteed for a full 12 months from the date of installation) then a garage door repair will be covered. It also may be worth checking with your home insurance provider, as a garage door repair could be covered under your current policy, even if the door itself is no longer under warranty. Hiring a professional to do the repairs is always preferable over doing it yourself, unless you are knowledgeable and confident enough to handle it on your own or with a friend.

We recommend hiring someone who knows what they’re doing not just because it’s in our interests as a business, but because you could risk serious injury when attempting garage door repairs yourself. Garage door panels are heavy – they’re commonly constructed from galvanised steel or timber and require multiple engineers to handle and fit. Fixing a garage door can often mean taking it down from the opening mechanism completely, fixing the problem and then reinstalling it, so it’s important that – if you are going to fix it yourself – you ensure you have enough pairs of hands to help you. It also should be noted that any tampering or modification to your garage door may cancel any existing warranty it has.

Common Garage Door Issues

Common small issues that you may be able to fix on your own include issues like the door not opening or closing properly or the door making strange noises. In cases like this, it’s often stiffness in the internal mechanism. This can often be attributed to moving parts which have become too dry or which have dirt or grime on them which is impairing movement. If it is safe to do so, inspect your garage door from the inside whilst it is closed. You should be able to locate the area experiencing problems easily by listening for squeaking or grinding sounds and watching to see if the mechanism is snagging anywhere as the door is being opened. You should get help with this, if you can, and be wary of touching the internal mechanism as the door is being opened, as you could get your fingers trapped.

A simple solution could be simply greasing certain areas, or removing any dirt or debris from the door mechanism itself. Hosing it all down with water and allowing it to dry can often alleviate problems caused by a build-up of grime. Issues which require new parts, such as springs or rails may need a little research if you’re unsure of what to do, or alternatively, you can call Evander for garage door repairs on 0345 145 0130.
